Language is a wonderful invention. ?It is one of the key points that separates us humans from other life forms. We have a range of different words and phrases that we can use to describe what we think, and how we feel.

We can use language to describe the colors of the ocean, or the location and direction of our favorite cafe. We can talk about a treasured memory of our past, or a dream we have for our future. Language is what connects us as humans.

But, like a telephone call, connections are not always clear. Language is not always enough for true, clear connections. Even when we speak the same language, it is easy to misunderstand and misinterpret the words and feelings of the people closest to us. This can be very frustrating. Everyone wants to be heard. Everyone wants to be understood.

So how do we increase our connection? As a teacher of language, this is a question that I often think about.

Who was your favorite teacher? And why? I have been lucky to have had many excellent teachers throughout my life. Regardless of the subject that they taught, they all had one thing in common: they had an ability to connect with their students. In my opinion, the most effective teacher is the teacher that can connect with their students.

Knowledge and information don’t have much use if you can’t effectively transfer that information. It’s like having a brand new iPhone with no wi-fi or data plan. ?The stronger the connection, the better the information will be received. This is the basis for effective communication for everybody, not just teachers and students.

So how exactly do we increase this connection? ?I think it is important to remember that communication is a two-way street. Being a good speaker, just makes you a good speaker. Likewise, being a good listener, just makes you a good listener.

Both components are necessary. We all want to be heard, and that includes the person we are talking to. For many of us, the desire to talk is stronger than the desire to listen. ?But, if we want to increase our connection, we have to remember to listen. We have to be active in our conversations.

What is an active speaker? What is an active listener? Being an active conversationalist is speaking and listening with care. I have to care about what I say, and how I say it. I have to care about what you say, and how you say it.

If I tell a story, I have to say it in a way that you can understand and connect with. In that way, you can better understand me. I should be mindful of who I am talking to, even when I am talking about myself. And when I listen, I must truly listen.

I have to do more than hear your words. I have to understand your mind and intent. The most active conversations are exchanges of energy. I give my energy to you, and you give yours to me. To reach true connection requires a constant exchange.

A lively conversation where you connect can be exhausting, but also very satisfying. It’s not always easy, but it is rewarding. And over time, these connections will only grow stronger. Talking is easy. Anyone can talk, but how many people can connect?
